First premiering in April 1997, Muvhango quickly cemented itself as a cultural cornerstone in the South African television landscape. Over the years, it introduced audiences to iconic characters such as Chief Azwindini, Mulalo, and KK — and helped shape the telenovela genre in the country.
Reflecting on the legacy of the show, creator Duma Ndlovu shared that Muvhango played a vital role in elevating the often-overlooked Tshivenda language and culture.
“If nothing else, Muvhango exposed a marginalised culture and helped Tshivenda become one of the most celebrated languages in the country,” Ndlovu said. “It was an honour to be part of a creative team that used their God-given talents to shine a light on our heritage.”
Beyond its dramatic storytelling, many fans and media professionals believe the soap opera contributed significantly to the country’s cultural evolution, from the apartheid era into a democratic society. It wasn’t just about entertainment; Muvhango sparked conversations, educated viewers, and reflected South Africa’s growing identity.
SABC2’s acting group executive for video entertainment, Lala Tuku, added:
“Muvhango wasn’t just a soapie; it was a celebration of our culture, identity, and pride. It inspired and united us for 28 years. As we say goodbye, SABC2 remains committed to telling stories that reflect the heartbeat of South Africa.”
While the final curtain call is approaching, Muvhango will be remembered not just as a television show but as a movement that helped redefine storytelling on South African screens.
